Yet another environmental crusader slain

Yet another self-made environmental protection activist has fallen – this time at the hand of a gunman believed to have been hired by local businessmen and politicians involved in the dumping of toxic industrial waste in Chachoengsao province.

The victim, 43-year old Prajob Nao-opas, was village headman of moo 14, tambon Nong Haen, Phanom Sarakham district. He was murdered in broad daylight on Monday by a gunman at an automobile garage on the Phanom Sarakham-Ban Sang road as he was waiting for mechanics to complete repairs to his pickup truck.

Witnesses told police the gunman and another man arrived at the garage in  a black Honda Accord. Both of them approached Prajob and one of them  fired four shots from an 11mm semi-automatic pistol at the headman, who died shortly after he was rushed to the district hospital. The two killers escaped in their car.

This story like many others is why Thai's are very scared to speak out or confront situations for fear of revenge, reprisal or death.
It is a sad world we live in if people are getting killed for trying to protect the environment.
The news reports are just depressing here in Thailand.
Im sure many Thai's would like to see change but are too scared to do anything about it.

dao, D14, Outing isn't the problem. Following up with prosecution is.

mogy71, D.13, Know the whispering syndrome well. Scary, isn't it?

We need an anonymous force that can out the massively corrupt and not have to fear for their lives .A Wiki leaks or United Hackers of a sort that can pull no punches and out everyone .

I always smile at the times my wife will be talking to me about 'happenings' in Thai society. We're in our home in the middle of nowhere with nobody within miles of us and yet she insists on whispering the tale to me. Woe betide me if I reply to her without lowering my voice. The fear ingrained by lack of protection for the normal folk runs deep. That's normal law abiding folk I refer to.
Condolences to Khun Prajobs family. Shame on the police.

    Diss 3
The 65 million that aren't corrupt are indifferent for the very reason this article explains .If you try to do good you are singled out and executed .They could get Kamnan Poh anytime they wanted to .He lives 80 km away .He now live in dangerous times where not only is corruption put up with but people now vote in favor of it .

Authorities, police and government put their energy into protecting the "influential person" leaving the person committed to standing up for what is right and decent to be chewed up and spat out, every time.

Dis#3 - there may be 65 million Thais, but we know that 70 percent of them approve of corruption. That is not a tiny minority.

Thailand, the hub of corruption! Rich criminals, apply today! Poors, stay away! Honest people, beware! Is this what this country has become? At least for its citizens it, alas, seems to be the true reality...

'geoffo', like mostly, I agree with you, but your conclusion is IMO wrong. Nobody 'got' Khamnan Poh, it was an 'arrangement' (and a criminal one IMO) he must have brokered to become VIP treatment in a good hospital located in his own turf... How many HOURS between his arrest and his arrival in Chonburi hospital?

People who do the right thing are killed, people that do the wrong things get rich. What kind of country has Thailand become? Void of any law, religion or moral values? Thailand has nothing to be proud of and should be ashamed that the country has deteriorated this far into chaos.
