Phuket police have confiscated 37,709 items of counterfeit brand-name clothing and bags, worth more than 40 million baht, according to a press release from the Department of Special Investigation (DSI).
It is Phuket's largest ever seizure of counterfeit merchandise, according to the DSI statement.
Police on July 3 raided two warehouses in tambon Patong of Kathu district, Phuket, after obtaining information that a Thai and a foreign businessman had stored a large quantity of fake products in the area.
In one location, inside two three-storey shophouses, police found 34,379 garments bearing the trademarks of various international brands. One suspect had been detained, the statement said.
At the second location, more than 3,000 falsely branded bags were seized, and two suspects apprehended.
The brand name owners claimed their losses would have totalled about 100 million baht if the fake products had been sold on the market, according to DSI deputy chief Permpoon Puenprasit.
