The government is set to invest at least 100 million baht to make the best use of information technology (IT) to manage its rice stocks, processing, transportation and delivery.
Chanudpakorn Vongseenin, president of the Public Warehouse Organisation (PWO), said Niwatthamrong Bunsongphaisan, deputy prime minister and commerce minister, recently assigned the organisation and related agencies to speed up installing IT systems to tighten and upgrade rice stock management.
Every stage of the rice pledging process should be monitored online, he said.Mr Chanudpakorn said appropriate technology is being chosen, with a procurement plan expected to wrap up this month.
The PWO was allocated 88 million baht from the government to install IT to monitor the rice pledging scheme back when it was initiated.
Mr Chanudpakorn brushed aside the possibility of applying a barcode to rice sacks to differentiate government rice stock and non-pledged rice, saying barcode application would be complicated and costly.
"We estimate it will cost 10 billion baht to apply a barcode system, and that is not worth the expense," he said, adding that the IT system will facilitate the issuance of vouchers or bai pratuan that farmers can cash in at the Bank for Agriculture and Agricultural Cooperatives.
