Fratelli Rossetti, a high-quality footwear brand from Italy famous for its unique designs and craftmanship, opened its flagship store in Bangkok at Gaysorn Plaza recently. Flown in especially for the occasion was Diego Rossetti, the present president of Fratelli Rossetti.

Established in the late-1950s by Renzo Rossetti, the brand started out from a small company that produced a few styles of black leather shoes. It gradually grew and gained reputation because of the outstanding craftsmanship. In the early 1970s, Renzo Rossetti made a name for himself by introducing an all-new concept shoes for women: the low heel. The new shoes with a masculine look successfully stepped out of the shadows with dignity and remains one of the brand's timeless styles.
In 1978, Diego Rossetti, the eldest son of Renzo Rossetti, joined the company, and opened the first boutique in Madison Avenue, New York. Since then, this Italian shoe brand has never shown the least sign of lagging, not even in the more recent global recession.
Today, the brand's head office is still in Parabiago, an important shoe district near Milan, in spite of the fact that Fratelli Rossetti has been a name of international repute for 60 years now. "Among fashion items, shoes are the most complicated item to make, much more than making clothes. They are made of many different materials, with varied sizes and shapes," said Rossetti. "Our shoes are neither too classic nor too crazy as we think that a pair of shoes should blend more with a person's look. So we concentrate more on searching for the best materials and the production. We have a very strong know-how in term of craftsmanship and produce everything in our own factory in our hometown in Italy."

According to Rossetti, the Fratelli Rossetti F/W 2013-2014 collection for men reinterpreted the splendour of Europe in six models, all of which feature the hammered leather with a clearly visible grain. For example, a hint of Central Europe is featured in the brand-new boot with double buckles and laces; the iconic Brera with its legendary tassels; and the Moccasin loafer with a band. The colours feature blacks, greys and burgundies. Each shoe is hand-brushed to bring out bright colour full of nuances.
For the women's collection, Fratelli Rossetti rediscovers the legendary Swinging London, brought back to life with all its vibrant optimism featuring black and white, optical designs and graphic prints. "They were the years of The Beatles, of Carnaby Street's venues, Twiggy and Biba. Years in which the pace of daily life was set by the music, and people expressed their personalities through their look," explained Rossetti.
Six models are inspired by Swinging London: black and white, emphasised by a combination of glossy effects and leather. The ankle boot with the tapered toe underscores its retro look with a touch of glam in the form of the strap above the ankle. The chic and elegant cropped high-heel boot, white and black take form in a wave with a highly graphic impact. The mannish inspiration is also found in the Oxford shoe, a must-have for Fratelli Rossetti. The flat ballerina also puts in an appearance with a tassel and laces and a somewhat preppy look. The collection is rounded off with the clutch bag with its squared, geometric silhouette, in perfect 1960s style.
"Fratelli Rossetti shoes are for people who truly understand quality products; a stylish and self-confident person. We are not targeting teenagers but people who are over 25 years old, who have already worked and have their own way of life," said Rossetti.
During the grand opening evening, the brand's visiting Italian master craftsman also revealed some of the secrets of a timeless style, showcasing the Toledo, a manual leather dyeing technique to acquire light shades. The made-to-order service was also on offer to guests _ to choose the colour of their footwear and the shoes will be made as exclusive one-offs, entirely by hand. Every item will then be personalised with the customer's own initials, branded into the inner lining.
"As you may have heard, shoes are like your dear friends, and good shoes will take you to good places. That is why we should take care of our 'friends' very well," he said.
"So, in every Fratelli Rossetti shoe box, we put the shoe polish along with the shoes for customers to take care of their shoes. If you take a good care of your shoes, they will last for a very long time. So for me, when I have to give up a pair of shoes to buy a new one, it's heartbreaking."
Today, Fratelli Rossetti has 27 stores worldwide. In Asia, there're stores in Hong Kong, Beijing, Shanghai, Taipei and Bangkok. The company plans to open another store soon in Seoul, South Korea.
Fratelli Rossetti flagship store is on the second floor of Gaysorn Plaza (tel 02-656-1025). Prices for men's shoes range from 14,000 to 39,000 baht; and 14,000 to 45,000 baht for women's shoes.
