Anyone who's into fashion, whether as fashionistas or as industry professionals, will find this a book that they can go back to again and again.
Box Accessories: Women Collections Autumn/Winter 2013.14 Milano. Paris. New York. London Edited by Emilia Minichiello 2,795 baht ISSN: 2035-9926 Available at Asia Books
Box Accessories is a large-format magazine that gives you the lowdown on every single fashion collection that matters from the Autumn/Winter 2013-2014 Milan, Paris, New York and London showrooms and catwalks.
The editorial is sparse, and almost unnecessary. In English and Italian, it covers a general overview, shoes, bags, details (such as tights, glasses, stoles, gloves) and jewellery.
It is written in poetic language that takes you on a hallucinatory journey, beginning with: "Scornfulness: the ease with which some manage to face difficulty. Balance, self-control and healthy detachment. The system of accessories develops the New Normal."
I preferred to just look at the pictures... and drool.
The pictures are the mainstay of the book, and give you a close-up look at each fashion item in all its glorious detail - the texture, the finishes, the stitching, the colours.
After the editorial, the book lists the top booksellers and news stands in Italy, followed by a list of showrooms for shoes and bags, featuring 12 brands starting with Bally, Borbonese and Bruno Magli, going on to Jimmy Choo, and ending with Sergio Rossi.
The catwalks section forms the bulk of the book, providing extensive coverage to the presentations of 69 fashion houses, from 3.1 Phillip Lim and Alexander Wang to Vivienne Westwood and Y-3. All the top names are there, which makes this book the second-best thing to actually sitting by the catwalk during Paris Fashion Week, albeit without the Anna Wintours, Kristen Stewarts, Rihannas and Jennifer Lawrences.
However, the outfits are only presented in smaller sizes, and are definitely secondary to the accessories, which receive the spotlight.
If you have managed to go through each and every one of the 288 pages, you will be the most well-informed fashionista in Bangkok. It's also the best way to prepare yourself for your seasonal shopping spree in any of the world's fashion capitals, since you will know in advance exactly what you want. You can capture the image on your phone, then make a bee-line for the specific boutiques and tell them you want this pair of Dior shoes, this Chanel handbag, this cute polka-dot bag from Miu Miu, this leather skirt from Hermes, and the beautiful baroque gown from Dolce & Gabbana. It will probably make your shopping spree so much easier, and allow you to spend so much more money within the same alloted time.
My only complaint about this magazine is that the pagination is not very clear, with page numbers being replaced most of the time by brand names. Therefore, it's not very user-friendly if you want to look up something based on the contents page.
