Malaysia to close Phuket tourism office

Malaysia has decided to close its tourism office in Phuket at the end of August and integrate the service into its Bangkok office.

Chong Yoke Har, deputy director general of Tourism Malaysia, said Malaysia wanted to centralise its Thailand tourism service in Bangkok by focusing on applying modern information technology as a core part of the service.
Tour agencies and tourists needing information are being directed to the Bangkok office or www.tourismmalaysia.gov.my.
Around 1.26 million Thais visited Malaysia in 2012, and spent more than 14 billion baht there.
Thais were the fourth largest spenders in Malaysia last year of a total of 25 million visitors that generated more than 600 billion baht of tourism income.
The country is aiming to attract 28 million visitors in 2014 to bring in around 700 billion baht, of that 1.6 million are expected to come from Thailand.
Tourism Malaysia has declared 2014 as its year of tourism, with the slogan “Visit Malaysia Year 2014”.
