Any Day Now is a film that will make you laugh, cry and think. On top of that, the message at the centre of the story is more relevant now than ever.
Any Day Now
Starring Alan Cumming, Garret Dillahunt, Isaac Leyva. Directed by Travis Fine. At SF and House RCA only.
Released in the US last year, this tear-jerking drama is directed by American actor and director Travis Fine, who wrote the script with George Arthur Bloom. Based on a true story from the late 1970s, Any Day Now walks you through the lives of a gay couple who fight for their right to adopt a mentally handicapped kid.
Lip-syncing along to a disco tune is Rudy Donatello, a New Yorker who moved to Los Angeles working as a drag queen in a gay bar with a dream of becoming a professional singer. Although he doesn't do a great job as a drag queen, the talented Alan Cumming, playing Rudy, nails the rest of the film as an unabashed yet sentimental gay man who is very straightforward when it comes to speaking his heart.
One night Rudy met Paul Fleiger (Garret Dillahunt), a recently-divorced, closeted district attorney who moved to LA with a dream of changing the world with his legal knowledge. After the romance grows, another person becomes involved.
Living in a dingy apartment, Rudy's neighbour is a drug-addicted prostitute and a mother of a quiet 14-year-old boy with Down's Syndrome. The boy, Marco, is played by Isaac Leyva, who will steal your heart with his smile as he clings to a blonde doll he always has with him.
After Marco's mother is put in jail, Rudy wants to fight for custody of the child, and he moves in with Paul in a bid to win the case. Paul, on the other hand, struggles to keep his job when prejudice against homosexuality is still strong in that era.
While some scenes and dialogue appear to be cliched, Cumming's exceptional acting keeps the film grounded, as well as the innocent Leyva who brightens the scene every time he speaks and breaks our hearts when he cries. With the global movement of same-sex marriage, including Thailand, Any Day Now will give you an example of why true love is genderless.
