The meeting of the Energy Regulatory Commission has agreed to raise the fuel tariff (Ft) rate on electricity use for September-December by seven satang per unit, the panel chairman Direk Lavansiri said on Friday.
He attributed the increase in the Ft rate to the baht’s sharp depreciation from 29 baht to 31 baht to the US dollar, resulting in an increase in prices of imported fuel used for electricity production.
Mr Direk said this meant household electricity bills would go up to 3.78-3.83 baht per unit.
He said he believed the slight increase would have little impact on the cost of living.
But if the baht continues to weaken up to early next year, the Ft rate could be again raised, he added.
The energy panel had earlier said the Ft rate would not be increased this year and would be kept unchanged at 46.92 satang per unit.
The Ft rate is announced every four months. The rate is calculated from fuel prices, the foreign currency exchange rate and the demand for electricity.
