If you look into the mirror and see dull skin, dark spots and premature lines staring back at you, there are two options - stop using a mirror or do something about it.
Your skin, just like the rest of your body, needs food and drink. It thrives on healthy and balanced nutrients, proper hydration and sufficient sleep. But as the skin gets older and external factors become more aggressive on the skin, extra help is needed.
It will probably be the hundredth time you will have read this, but use sunscreen on a daily basis to prevent the skin from being damaged by harsh UV rays. The sun is the main cause of premature ageing and skin concerns, from blemishes and uneven colouring to sunburn. A good sunscreen can shield your skin against UVA (responsible for ageing) and UVB (responsible for burning). Prevention is better than cure, but it's even better to do both. Your skin actually needs curing every day, and at night it heals itself from the daily wear and tear. Serums, facial masks and night creams can help make the job easier and more effective, resulting in radiant, healthy skin when you wake up the next morning. If you sleep in an air-conditioned room, your skin needs moisturising.
Healthy skin is well-hydrated skin, as dehydration can lead to myriad skin concerns. Moisturise twice a day with the product that works for you.
On particularly exhausting or hectic days, give your skin extra treats, such as an exfoliation, mask or by using a good serum to minimise the damage from all the stress. Read the label carefully to see how often the product is supposed to be used. Some products are very intense and using them too often can weaken the skin instead.
To reap the full benefits of the products, use them at the right moments. Moisturiser should be applied when the skin is still moist after showering, ideally within three minutes of drying the skin with a towel. Today, there are some products that can be used in conjunction with facial lotions to make them more effective, such as extra vitamins or serum. However, some products are not meant to be mixed. Using too many skincare products in one application can do more harm than good since incompatible ingredients can lead to irritation and breakouts. Some ingredients become less effective when layered while some can even completely cancel each other out.
The ultimate antidote to tired and too-mature skin is vitamin C. The fresh kick for tired skin also increases its natural protection against environmental toxins. However, copper peptides (commonly found in anti-ageing moisturisers and serums) can counteract vitamin C, so check the labels carefully before layering up. Don't assume that products from the same brand are designed to work well together. Test a few and be the judge.
Be aware that no skincare product can work like Botox or an eraser. It takes time to see results, usually four to eight weeks. If that's too long a wait, a good foundation and powder can help you achieve glowing skin. A lot of brands are now offering make-up products that contain skin-nourishing ingredients, so you can look good and pamper the skin at the same time.
