Make-up with electrifying colours catches the eye when passing Illamasqua counters, where a smashed mirror forms part of the decor. Conceptually, breaking the looking glass liberates the bolder person hiding inside all of us to be who we really are, and putting on make-up is a part of this self-expression.
Makeup artist, Chitisan Panthong demonstrating the Sophie-I technique, which involves sketching of the socket line with the Medium Pencil.
Thus Illamasqua's dramatic styles are inspired by people in the alternative scene, and the Sophie-I look pays tribute to Sophie Lancaster, whose individuality led to a brutal assault and tragic death in August 2007.
The British brand named a black Medium Pencil and a powder blusher after her. The versatile pencil can be used on eyes, lips and the body, by directly drawing on the skin to create bold lines, and it can also be used inside the waterline.
In a shimmering golden coral, the Sophie powder blusher provides four to five variations of the same shade, depending on how lightly or intensely applied.
The make-up products are key items for creating the edgy look, characterised by the Sophie-I's alternative take on the traditional smoky eyes.
"We encourage women to try different eye looks and it may not be dramatic as it seems. The Sophie-I look is wearable and easy to do, by using the Medium Pencil, two shades of eyeshadow, a gel eyeliner and a mascara," said Illamasqua make-up artist Chitisan Panthong. "This helps bring definition to eye shape and make eyes look bigger, especially small and monolid Asian eyes."
With a creamy texture, the Medium Pencil is for sketching on the socket line, and an eyeshadow brush is used to even the distribution of the black colour. Eyeshadow application begins by using a light colour on eyelids and to highlight under the brow bone. A black eyeshadow is then applied over the sketched line to intensify the dark hue.
"The dark eye make-up against fresh-looking skin with a pop of coral on the cheeks represents the face of a young woman who dares to express herself," said Chitisan of the completed look which echoes Sophie Lancaster's make-up style.
Because of their goth look, the 20-year-old Sophie and her boyfriend were attacked in a Lancashire park by a group of teenagers. Established by her mother Sylvia Lancaster, the Sophie Lancaster Foundation campaigns against hate crimes with activities that aim to change young people's mindset and increase their acceptance of subcultures.
Illamasqua supports The Sophie Lancaster Foundation in its commitment to changing attitudes towards subcultures, and proceeds from every purchase of Sophie products go to the foundation.
EYES WIDE OPEN
While a sweep of colour can instantly beautify cheeks and lips, eye make-up involves more artistry in drawing, shading, layering and blending of colours to create looks. Cosmetic brands, however, provide step-by-step instructions that make it easier to primp peepers.
Lancome Hypnose Palette was created to simplify make-up application while maintaining professional-level results. The palette contains four shades of eyeshadow, a built-in eyeliner and the first ever magnetic applicators that click back into the black lacquer case.
With fresh and natural shades, you can create Doll Eyes for wide-open eyes while bolder shades are used for getting the smoky Drama Eyes.. Elongating the eyes, the Star Eyes lends a glamorous red-carpet look.
Lancome's eye makeup involves five easy steps. Firstly, sweep the main shade for a colour block over the eyelids, followed by dabbing the highlighter on the eyebrow arch, and then using the eyeliner to define the eye shape. From the remaining two colours of the Hypnose palette, put the darker shade into the lid hollow and to the outer corner for a "cat eye" effect and lastly apply the more luminous shade on the inner corner of the eye for a final touch of radiance.
Three's series of 4D Eye Palette continues with quartets from the Rock Ur Life collection for autumn/winter 2013. The eyeshadow palettes contain four different shades and textures. Firstly, the creamy base is applied to build depth while priming eyelids for the powder nuance colour and shimmering key colour. The fourth hue then serves as a glittery highlight that gives eyes a dressed-up look.
Only two beauty wands are needed to get Bisous Bisous playful eye look. A part of the Korean brand's Summer Circus collection, the Dual Eyeliner combines a shimmer liquid eyeliner in white or beige for the lower lash line, with a black eyeliner for the upper lash line.
