Border trade between Thailand and Myanmar is expected to rise following the launch of Nok Air's Mae Sot-Mawlamyine flights on Sunday.
Tak governor Suriya Prasartbundit, who was aboard the flight, said the cross-border trade will increase significantly ahead of the launch of the Mae Sot special economic zone and the Asean Economic Community (AEC).
He was joined on the flight by about 30 Thai and Myanmar businessmen.
Mr Suriya urged Thai businessmen to invest in Mawlamyine, formerly known as Moulmein, especially in the hotel industry.
He said demands for accommodation in Mawlamyine will grow with air travel to the city now available.
