CTH, the broadcast rights holder of the English Premier League (EPL), has introduced a new set-top box for C-band satellite dish subscribers.
CTH’s new set-top box for C-band satellite dish subscribers. Subscribers can watch English Premier League matches using the service.
The move is aimed at solving the problem of slow installation of its cable-TV and KU-band satellite-TV services for new subscribers wishing to watch the EPL games.
The new set-top box is priced at 2,140 baht plus a monthly fee of 555 baht.
Subscribers can watch 380 EPL matches on five standard-definition (SD) channels as well as two high-definition channels - Fox Sports Plus and Nat Geo Wild - and 28 other SD channels including Thai Sports, Kix, Cinema and Asian Hits.
Subscribers can also watch other channels as their signals are transmitted through Thaicom 5 and Thaicom 6 satellites.
Chief executive Krissanan Ngampatipong said 4.2 million Thai households watch TV using a C-band satellite.
"If we can access this C-band satellite market, we can reach more EPL fans," he said.
The advantage of a C-band satellite system is a clearer picture and a strong TV signal even when it rains, said Mr Krissanan.
The launch of the Thaicom 6 satellite enabled the set-top box, as it has more transponders than Thaicom 5.
Consumers who already have C-band satellites at home just have to buy the box. Mr Krissanan said CTH has 800,000 new subscribers, while many more wish to subscribe.
The company is trying to clear all installation work for its cable- and satellite-TV services.
The new set-top box is sold at leading hypermarkets including Big C, Tesco Lotus and Makro.
The monthly fee of 555 baht is promotional until Oct 31, after which it will rise to 799 baht.
In another development, TrueVisions, the country's largest pay-TV operator, achieved first-half revenue of 5.4 billion baht, up by 16.2%, thanks to rising advertising income and the music entertainment business.
Subscriber numbers increased to 2.3 million, with 37% using its free-to-air box, 29% the free-view package, 15% the standard package and 17% the premium package.
Subscribers for the premium package with EPL content fell to 393,000 at the end of June from 435,000 last year, as its rights to broadcast EPL games expired.
The average revenue per subscriber per month fell to 934 baht from 972 baht.
