'Star Citizen' fans raise a record $6.3 million, game due November 2014

Wing Commander successor Star Citizen has closed out its initial crowd-funding round having raised $6.3 million for the November 2014 computer game.

The game will be the debut effort from Cloud Imperium Games, whose founder Chris Roberts led the creation of formative space combat sim Wing Commander.

Building on its 1990 predecessor, Star Citizen promises combat and exploration within a sandbox universe, with singleplayer and online multiplayer content from the off, trade and tax rates for players to juggle, and the chance to become a wealthy industrial magnate or a skilful mercenary pilot.

Its $6.3m sum came from two sources: the game's own site, and the Kickstarter funding platform. A $4.2m wedge was obtained via fans paying through Roberts Space Industries, and a parallel Kickstarter campaign closed at $2.1m on November 19, where it became the sixth most funded video game project.

Star Citizen's total may yet rise between now and its November 2014 launch, as the team is still accepting pre-orders and donations as development continues.

It's a good year for space sims, with FTL: Faster Than Light boosted by positive public reaction, Amplitude Studios' first game Endless Space well received, while existing space game Eve Online recieved its Inferno expansion.

Minecraft creator Markus Persson working on 0x10c, and the creator of another influential space exploration title, Elite, recently took to Kickstarter with a pitch for Elite: Dangerous.
